Goals

The goals for this lab assignment are:

  • Understand Clustering

  • Get familiar with the Clustering dataset

  • Work on the midterm project

1. Unsupervised Learning (Three Hours)

  • User Guide

  • Review the examples in section 2.3 Clustering

  • Review the examples in section 2.5. Decomposing signals in componets

  • Write down you understanding of unsupervised learning in the ML_Algorithms.PDF file.

2. Clustering (Two Hours)

  • Overview of clustering methods

  • Compare the clustering algorithms, using the Iris dataset.

  • Add the sections about clustering to your existing lab 4 Submission,ML_Algorithms.PDF

3. Midterm Draft 1 (Three Hours)

  • Carefully review the project requirements and the guidelines provided in the AAAI 2026 Conference Papers (midterm deadline). Ensure you understand the scope and expectations.

  • Choose the dataset that you plan to analyze for your research. Make sure the dataset is relevant to your research question(s).

  • Clearly formulate your research question(s). These should guide your analysis and align with your chosen dataset.

  • Start drafting your literature review. In Overleaf, cite at least six academic papers that are related to your research question(s) and methods.

  • Start outlining your methodology section. Describe the research methods you will use to analyze the dataset, providing a rationale for your approach.

  • Each team should schedule a 15-minute Zoom meeting with your instructor to discuss your midterm paper topic.

  • Submit your draft as midterm_draft_lab_5.pdf. Follow the AAAI Conference format, ensuring that your submission is double-blind, with no author information.

4. Submission Guide

  • Submission format: Each team must submit one file named lab_5_lastname.zip. The file should include:

    1. midterm_draft_lab_5.pdf in AAAI format, double-blind, with no author information.

    2. ML_Algorithms.PDF in AAAI format, containing all findings, summaries, and work from this lab.

5. Notes

  • Submit your zip file for the lab to BlackBoard.

  • Lab assignments will typically be released on Thursday and will be due by midnight on the following Wednesday.
