Class participation, Google Folder.
Goals
The goals for this lab assignment are:
-
Understand regression techniques.
-
Gain familiarity with the Diabetes dataset.
-
Practice using the Final Paper format in the HCII template.
-
Understand the double-blind paper submission process.
-
Experience the double-blind peer review process.
-
Finalize teammate selection for future labs and projects.
1. Regression (Three Hours)
-
Review: Analyze 15 examples from the Diabetes dataset.
-
Compare and summarize: Evaluate the differences between the examples and write a brief summary.
-
Selection: Choose three Supervised Learning code examples from the Diabetes dataset. Explain your selection in ML_Algorithms.PDF.
-
Write-Up: Document your findings in the HCII final paper format (same Overleaf project as Lab 3).
2. Final Paper Format (Two Hours)
-
Overleaf Setup: Make a copy of the Overleaf project template, rename it my_project_name, and edit your own copy. Do not edit the template directly.
-
Draft Submission: Submit the first draft of your midterm paper anonymously, following the double-blind process. Focus on two key parts: the dataset and research questions. You can either write a review paper or an experiment paper.
-
Peer Review: Next week, we will peer review the submissions during class.
-
File Management: Share links within each team to ensure everyone works on the same document.
-
Final Paper Format Practice: Add the regression section to your Lab 3 on classification. Name the file ML_Algorithms.PDF. Include page numbers, references, equations, tables, and figures.
3. Literature Review (Two Hours)
-
Read: Read three papers, including:
-
Write a summary: In ML_Algorithms.PDF, summarize each paper and prepare for class discussion.
4. Midterm Project Idea (One Hour)
-
Write a proposal: Develop your midterm project idea, focusing on the title, dataset, and research questions. Decide whether your paper will be a review paper (analyzing existing literature) or an experiment paper (conducting and reporting on new experiments). Clearly state your choice in the proposal.
-
File Format: Name the file midterm_project_idea.pdf, ensure it is in HCII format, and follow the double-blind process with no author information.
-
Peer Review Preparation: This submission will be used for a double-blind peer review in class next week.
5. Finalize a teammate
-
Teammate selection: Find a teammate for this lab, the midterm, and final project. You will collaborate on this and all subsequent assignments.
6. Submission Guide
-
Submission format: Each team must submit one file named lab_4_lastname1_lastname2.zip. The file should include:
-
midterm_project_idea.pdf in HCII format, in HCII format, double-blind, with no author information.
-
ML_Algorithms.PDF in HCII format, containing all findings, summaries, and work from this lab.
-
-
Create a shared GitHub project for your team, add your teammate and the instructor.
7. Notes
-
Email 'x.qu@gwu.edu' your zip file for lab 4.
-
Lab assignments will be released on Fridays and due the following Thursday.
